USMLE
The United States Medical Licensing Examination or USMLE is a multi-part professional medical sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Medical doctors or medical graduates are required to pass the USMLE exam before being allowed to practice medicine in American hospitals. The USMLE assesses a doctor’s or a physician's ability to apply medical knowledge, medical concepts, and medical principles, and to demonstrate fundamental patient-cantered skills, that are important in health and disease and that constitute the basis of safe and effective patient care.
The USMLE consists of three steps. All three USMLE steps must be passed before a medical graduate is eligible to apply for a license to practice medicine in hospitals in the USA. Medical students who have graduated from non-US medical schools and international medical graduates must pass all three steps of the USMLE exam to be licensed to practice medicine in the US hospitals, regardless of the title of their medical degree. Results of the USMLE exam are used in granting the initial license to practice medicine in the USA and to enrol on a hospital residency programme in USA.
Securing a USA Hospital Residency
Hospital residency is required on-the-job training within American hospitals for medical graduates who wish to specialise in a particular medical field or medical specialisation. The hospital residencyin USA would typically last from 3-8 years depending on the medical specialisation chosen. With a limited number of hospital residency positions each year, and a surplus of applications, international medical graduates may need to work harder to secure the right hospital residency position.
Most hospitals in USA select their hospital residency candidates from medical applicants who participate in the “Match” process. This system of matching candidates to hospital residency training positions through a centralized “Matching” process allows medical graduates to personally determine their preferences, while simultaneously allowing the hospitals to rank hospital residency applicants. The preference lists are merged by computer at the National Resident Matching (NRMP). The hospital residency ‘matching’ process results are announced annually in March.
Generally, hospital residency programs in USA look for USMLE scores above 200/82, the higher USMLE score the better. They also prefer USA hospital work experience and letters of recommendation from physicians or doctors with whom the medical graduates have worked. A personal statement outlining goals, reasons for entering the medical profession, medical specialisation interested in, and special interests is also required. Medical graduates are recommended to plan ahead in order to comfortably and safely meet these requirements prior hospital residency Match deadlines.
