Studying medicine
Students who wish to study medicine and consider a medical career not only they expect to have a challenging time during and after medical school but must possess certain attributes to enable there meet those challenges.
To study medicine you should have high level of motivation, tenacity, initiative, courage, resilience, loyalty, energy, enthusiasm and great deal of compassion. In additional medical students must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team and be friendly and pleasant. You need the ability to be able to wind down and relax and to have hobbies and pastimes that will allow you to do so.
Medical degrees are taught at medical schools and consist of 2 key stages, the preclinical study and the clinical study. Preclinical medicine consists of the basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, embryology, pharmacology, genetics, pathology. The clinical medicine stage is more practical in medical setting such as university hospitals and consists of teaching in the various areas of clinical medicine such as internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and surgery.
A bachelor in medicine will take 7 years of study including a 2-year foundation program called A-Levels which taught at colleges rather than universities and a 5 year medical degree at a medical school. The first 2 years are preclinical studies and the remaining 3 years are clinical studies.
Medical schools in the USA and Canada require from students to complete an undergraduate degree in any subject particularly in science or biology before applying for a graduate medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) program. Some students opt for the research-focused MD/PhD dual degree, which is usually completed in 7-8 years. Medical schools in the US and Canada expect students to have study science subjects which are prerequisite for studying medicine such as chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, English, labwork, and so forth.
Australian medical schools and universities have 2 systems of teaching medicine Students can choose to take a five or six year undergraduate medical degree Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or BMed) straight from high school,. International students need to do the medicine foundation program before they can apply to study medicine in Australia the other system is similar to medical schools in the US and Canada where student n need to complete an a medical sciences degree first then can apply to Australian medical schools for graduate entry to bachelor of medicine (BM) or bachelor of surgery MBBS)
