Associate Degree

The associate degree is an undergraduate degree and taught by mainly community colleges, junior colleges, technical colleges and some universities in the USA. Students studying the associate degree need to complete a minimum of 6o semester credit hours on full time study basis. The associate degree has three main parts:


Students have a choice of studying the associate degree on full time basis or online study mode or distance learning mode. Students who enrol on full time study can complete the associate degree in 4 semesters or 2 years (15 semester credit hours). The associate degree as an undergraduate degree fall into different types Arts degree, Applied Science degree, Science degree, and occupational degree.

Associate of Arts degree (AA): This degree is designed to transfer to a four-year college or university.

Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS): Designed to prepare graduates for career entry or job advancement after 2 years of college study. AAS degrees may transfer in whole or in part to 4 year colleges. The Associate of Applied Science degree may also be known by occupational specific titles such as Associate in Engineering Technology, Associate in Business, etc.

Associate of Science degree (AS): it is a 2 year degree taught over 4 semesters and allows students to transfer to a bachelor degree by doing additional 2 years of study either at a university or college.

Occupational Degree: Also referred to as applied degree programs, an occupational degree program at a two-year college is designed to prepare students to enter the workforce immediately following graduation. The primary function is career preparation, however some courses and/or programs may transfer to 4 year colleges.
