Academic English

To learn English for the purpose of joining university you need to consider completing an academic English language course as part of your English language preparation. This academic English programme is ideal for students who intend to study at a university where English is the primary language of teaching. Successfully completing the academic English language course enables students to join university with a level of English that will allow them to study with confidence and get the most from their studies.

The academic English will prepare students for entry to university degree courses be it undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. The academic English course aims to improve students’ communication and independent learning knowledge and skills using the English language. The academic English language course is a highly integrated programme focussing on grammatical skills, subject specific lexical knowledge, academic skills and research skills. The academic English course content includes: Reading for writing; Listening for speaking; Core skills for University Life; English for Academic subjects; Cultural Studies.

Academic English courses have strong focus on academic English language skills including study skills, presentation skills, listening to lectures, note-taking and extended writing. Students will learn skills in essay writing, seminar participation, researching methodologies, listening, note-taking, academic reading and team work and are provided with course materials especially designed to address the English language skills required for academic study at university level.

Students attend a mixture of classes, seminars, workshops and individual tutorials, working individually and in small groups.

Students must reach the upper intermediate English, high-intermediate English and advanced English to be able to join the academic English course. Alternatively students must have a minimum score of approximately 450 paper-based TOEFL, or 133 computer-based TOEFL, a 58 on the internet-based TOEFL or a minimum score of 4 IELTS to join the academic English course

Normally students are given a placement test on the first day of the academic English course to assess their English language level. Any students not achieving the required score on this test will be transferred to the general English language course to further improve their English language level until they reach the English level required to join the academic English course.
